Introduction

Site unveils a space where the visual illusion of Liao’s “Surface Engineering Method” and “Fakeology” coexist with reality. In this “artistic site,” his works assume the role of objects found in daily life. Employing the “Surface Engineering Method” to replicate these objects, the artist interweaves art with real daily scenes to fabricate a site where the boundary between the real and the fake is blurred. Instead of following conventional topics in the tradition of realist art, his subject matter adopts the quiet appearances of everyday life, turning an “artistic site” into an “event site.” These realistic pseudo-objects perform an illusionist show that subverts the spectator’s perception. Site therefore serves as a space where audiences recalibrate the way they perceives and observes things, prompting them to reexamine the surrounding and its details—it is an ever-going process that constantly resets and readjusts their perception and cognition.
